2008 Line Up
Nortec Collective’s (Tijuana, México) masterminds Bostich (Ramón Amezcua) + Fussible (Pepe Mogt) began experimenting with traditional Mexican music and synthesizing it through electronic filters since the late 90’s. Resulting in a unique sound that took over the club scene in Tijuana known today as Nortec, the fusion of “Norteño” and “Techno”, composed of five musicians.

GRUPO FANTASMA are an 11-piece, Latin funk orchestra from Austin, Texas. Throughout their 7 year career, Groupo’s rich sound and earth-shattering live shows have earned them spots at Austin City Limits and headlining several showcases at SXSW. They performed with Prince in London this past August, and they’ve been featured on PBS’s Austin City Limits.

VALLEJO, voted “Best Rock Band” two years in a row by the Austin Music Awards, has a modern rock sound with soulful lyrics and Latin percussion grooves. Since their beginning in 1995, the group’s music has been featured on TV shows such as WB’s Roswell, MTV’s Road Rules and UPN’s America’s Next Top Model. Vallejo was even granted their own “Vallejo Day” by the mayor of Austin.

PISTOLERA is a New York City-based Latin pop-folklorico quartet with a unique blend of traditional Mexican music and pop rock melodies. Armed with only bass, drums, accordion and guitar backing Spanish lyric songs, Pistolera’s music has made a major dent in Latin and mainstream music communities.

BOMBASTA bring the urban Latino sound from the streets of Central Texas. They fuse hip hop, cumbia, rock steady, rancheras, soul and salsa into a sound full of underground beats promoting activism. The group plays at fundraisers, marches and community events, hoping to increase community involvement and positive activism.

MASTER BLASTER SOUND SYSTEM is a music collective lead by composer/arranger Dusty Oliveira featuring remixes and mashups of cumbia, reggae and hip hop classics backed by an all-star lineup of musicians and vocalists. Members of El Sancho, DJ Kane, La Conquista, Bombasta and Kanko often play along side his live arrangements. Oliveira is also a notable character in the cumbia underground.

LA CONQUISTA is made up of five gorgeous ladies playing some of the most infectious and fun bi-lingual pop in the Americas. Their music also integrates a mix of urban cumbia, hip hop and even reggaeton. La Conquista have a very engaging and energetic live show, and they put forth their all to get the crowd involved and singing along to a pop anthem or two.

KANKO began as an collaborative experiment between songwriter Brian Ramos (Fantasma) and producer Dusty Oliveira (Master Blaster) mixing traditional Latin American sounds with punk and hard rock. As the project started to take off Kanko gained a few members – Ryan Rooney, Nick Trevino and John Spiece – and the hard edged, neo-cumbia tones became bubbled to the surface.

ANGEL FERRER is an Austin singer/songwriter originally from Puerto Rico. Ferrer’s music is smooth and soulful. It’s full of light and catchy grooves set in a warm bed of soothing harmony. Ill Camino was Ferrer’s last musical project with help from his twin brother and current bass player, Alberto.

CHARANGA CAKEWALK is the music of Michael Ramos, and it’s a feel-good mix of tejano, flamenco folklorica, merengue, salsa, garage rock, ska and reggaeton. Ramos, a multi-instrumentalist capable of playing anything from accordion to Hammond B-3, has spent time on stage and in the studio wielding an instrument or two for John Mellencamp, Paul Simon and Patty Griffin, among others.

Sergio Carvajal is a Venezuelan Filmmaker, Performer, Songwriter, Show Promoter and frustrated Poet based in Austin, TX. Musically, Sergio's style could be classified as Classic but new - think of late 70's salsa, calypso, soca, and plena, spiked with new electronic sounds, rock, and even classical music.

MANEJA BETO play what they refer to as “indie en espanol.” The members of the group came together in Austin from all over Texas to bring music that’s as hip as it is cultured with a blend of Tejano, Son, indie rock, Britpop and Cumbia. DJ MANNY is a record store co-owner by day and a DJ by night. He was born in Puerto Rico and has been living in Austin for the past 12 years, 10 of which he’s spent DJing. A few weeklies around town, private parties, and a monthly slot at Red Fez keep him pretty busy playing music that’s sexy, fun and energetic.

EL TULE is an infectious and unique blend of cumbia, Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban, rock, salsa and reggae. Their music, which is a conglomeration of several different cultural backgrounds and influences, is upbeat, feel-good and dance heavy. Many of El Tule’s songs build on folk tales and legends such as the chupacabra and La Ruta Maya.

FRENETICA is a multi-racial, bilingual pop rock group from Austin, Texas. They began as a duo with Becky Ozuna and Charles Romalotti playing songs from acoustic ballads to ska-like dancing tunes, but have since become a five-piece. Frenetica also sometimes incorporate varied instrumentation into their music via flute, timpani, lead pipes and others.

BOCASTRIA, an Austin Latin rock and Tejano fusion group, is steadily gaining wide recognition as a top Latin band.
